When You Don’t Need Pneumatics
Not every pipe-sealing job needs an air pump. Mechanical plugs seal by hand-tightening a wing nut or lever — the gasket expands mechanically against the pipe wall. Faster to deploy, simpler to carry, and no risk of overinflation damaging the plug or the pipe.
Which Mechanical Plug?
Gripper (End-of-Pipe & Clean-Out) — Cherne’s mechanical expansion plug. Rated up to 17 PSI for drain testing at heights up to 40 feet. The standard for DWV (drain-waste-vent) testing in residential and commercial plumbing.
Econ-O-Grip — Cost-effective low-pressure blocking plug for basic drain testing. When you need a seal but don’t need high-pressure rating.
J-Plug & H-Plug — Locking monitoring well plugs with mechanical seals and key-controlled access. Designed for environmental monitoring wells, not plumbing testing. See also Locking Well Plugs.
Mechanical vs. Pneumatic — When to Use Each
Mechanical when: drain testing, clean-out plugging, well sealing, routine low-to-medium pressure testing, and situations where carrying an air pump isn’t practical.
Pneumatic when: high-pressure sewer testing, large-diameter pipe isolation, or when the test specification calls for a pneumatic plug specifically. See Blocking Plugs and Bypass Plugs.
PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES
What pressure can a Gripper plug handle?
Cherne Gripper plugs are rated up to 17 PSI, suitable for DWV (drain-waste-vent) testing at heights up to 40 feet of water head. Always confirm the pressure rating on the specific product matches your test requirements.
Do I need tools to install a mechanical plug?
No. Mechanical plugs are hand-tightened using the built-in wing nut or lever. No air pump, no special tools. That’s their primary advantage over pneumatic plugs.
