Flush-Mount Well Access

When a monitoring well needs to be completed at grade — in a parking lot, sidewalk, or paved area — a monitoring well manhole provides the surface-level access point. The manhole frame sits flush with the surrounding surface, and the cover protects the well casing below.

These are different from standard sewer manholes. Monitoring well manholes are smaller (typically 5” to 18”), designed to accommodate well casing rather than human entry, and often require bolt-down or locking lids for regulatory compliance.

Key Considerations

  • Traffic loading — Will vehicles drive over the cover? If yes, choose ductile or cast iron with appropriate load rating.
  • Well casing size — The manhole opening must accommodate your well casing diameter plus any above-ground fittings (caps, plugs, sampling ports).
  • Security — Bolt-down lids prevent unauthorized access and satisfy most regulatory requirements for well security.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES

What’s the difference between a monitoring well manhole and a standard manhole?

Monitoring well manholes are smaller (5”–18” vs. 12”–44”+) and designed for well casing access, not human entry. They’re used for flush-mount well completions in paved areas.

Do I need a manhole AND a well plug?

Typically yes. The manhole provides the surface-level access frame. The well plug or cap seals the actual well casing inside the manhole. They serve different functions.
